9 November 2009 - 0:05Welcome to Fatherhood

Becoming a father for the first time is, of course, a big deal. A new life is something to be cherished and treasured and yet at the same time, it’s quite a significant change. There’s someone new coming into your life that you will be responsible for; its your job to make sure your child grows up with a solid roof over his/her head, that there’s enough love to go around, that everything is as it should be.

Fatherhood is definitely a life changing event. Many new fathers experience a rollercoaster ride of emotions-it’s not just expectant mothers who are fraught with emotional highs and lows. There’s the excitement of being dad, mixed with fear of not being a good enough parent, along with dread about the changes that will have to be made.

Being a father means that your entire life is turned upside down. Changes are going to come.

Of course, with these changes, there’s a whole lot of anxieties too. No one is perfectly calm and collected when a new life is on the way. It’s absolutely normal to experience these sorts of fears and worries. Psychologists actually say that the majority of men have concerns about becoming new fathers.

However, no matter how anxious or out of control you feel, the best solution is to attack these fears head on.

Here’s a look at some of the common worries and fears that face new dads to be.

A somewhat chief problem or issue that tends to come about when a new baby is being brought into the home is money. Pocketbooks do get tighter with a new child. Most new parents will probably spend at least $10,000 in the first year alone.

A young child needs diapers, special food, medical attention, clothes, toys, and the list goes on. It’s not exactly cheap to raise a child; but keep in mind too, that expenses can easily be reeled in. A budget needs to be made and stuck to. Of course, there will be some things that you have to give up, going out on the town, for instance, or getting new cars and gadgets may have to hold off. But remember too, that all a baby really needs is love.

Another big concern that often comes up has to do with health issues. Many parents, both mothers and fathers to be, are worried about what could go wrong. What would happen if their child’s health is at risk in some way? The good news is that there are solid statistics to reassure even the most nervous of soon to be parents-fully 96-97% of all children are born without any health issues at all. The key is to focus on staying positive and keeping a glass half full attitude. Don’t worry.

A common fear that afflicts many new parents is that of being not quite good enough. Many parents, fathers and mothers alike, have this idea of the ideal parent and they are afraid of not being able to live up to that. The truth is though, the very fact that you’re thinking about whether you can or can’t live up to that ideal goes to show that you care and that’s the first step to becoming a good father.

When it comes to being a father just remember all you need is love.
