1 March 2010 - 0:06Getting Ready For A Cheerleading Competition

Are you looking for some cheerleading information that will help you look good and beat out the competition when participating in cheerleader competitions? Since there is so much to prepare for, many people suggest that a squad should start getting everything going about 3 months prior to the event. Keep reading to find out what you need to do.

Roughly three months before the event, you’ll want to check and see if any of the cheerleaders uniforms need alterations. If that is the case, then there will be lots of time to have them altered as needed. A list should be prepared of all the stunts that the squad plans to execute, like running and tumbling, standing tumbling, pyramids and any others that the team has been studying and practicing. Remember that at this point they do not have to be perfectly performed; just carried out safely.

Choosing the music for cheerleading routines is another item that should be taken care of about 3 months prior to the competition. You can choose to have it custom made to your routine or you can use music that is pre-mixed. Once the music has been selected, the squad needs to begin practicing the stunts and moves they will perform. Most cheerleader competitions adhere to a strict time limit (about 2 minutes) so you need to be sure to finish a few seconds under the time limit or the team will be penalized.

Around two months before the event you need to prepare a preliminary schedule to be given to parents, in order to be certain there will be no scheduling issues. It should also provide them a timeline in which to make sure all essential items will be collected, like shorts, hair accessories, shoes and socks, make-up, and so forth. Be sure you indicate that it is only a tentative schedule, as there are occasions when events are rescheduled or canceled. The squad also must continue practicing their routine, and checking it to ensure that it flows seamlessly and that it meets all specifications.

By one month before the cheerleader competitions the routine should be perfected and the focus should be on polishing it. Several dress rehearsals should be done in full cheerleading uniforms; if possible video tapes of these rehearsals should also be made. This will make it easier to catch any areas that may need some work before heading to the competition.

Cheerleaders are the best at inspiring the crowd into cheering for their home team. But there is much more to cheerleading than that. Discover more useful information about competition cheerleading tips and more at Cheerleading 101.

25 February 2010 - 0:02The Features You Need In A Portable Fish Finder

Every fisher has been there; going from spot to spot looking for a bite only to go home empty handed. It’s a frustrating feeling to say the least. However, technology has become every fisherman’s best friend. A portable fish finder can help you find your next catch by being your eyes UNDER your boat. In this article, we’ll explain how this handy piece of fishing gear works and how to choose one suited to your needs and budget.

Portable fish finders are a wonderful piece of equipment that can actually make it easier to locate fish when used properly. Before the invention of this equipment, fishers used a depth finder that only indicated the depth under the boat. There was no accurate display indicating the existence of schools of fish. Therefore, depth finders were of little use to commercial fishers. After that came the sounders with printed graphs rolls that were extremely accurate if utilized properly. However, the true leap forward was the advent of the LCD (liquid crystal display) sounder that indicated both bottom contours and fish. Today there exists a wide range of these LCD fish finders.

Choosing the suitable portable fish finder can be challenging since the market pricing is highly competitive and products are being updated all the time. High end devices can cost more than the typical dinghy, but plain units can be completely within your means and cost as little as $300 from a discount fish finder store.

The technology has come some distance since electronic fish finders first showed up on the market. Contemporary finders are thinner, more lightweight and more menu-driven than their forerunners. The units have both color or black and white displays and the displays come in many different sizes. The bigger display screens are well suited to larger fishing boats where they can be stored out of the sun and weather conditions. These are just the thing for commercial fishing vessels.

The key to the effectiveness of a fish finding sonar is its transducer housing. This is essentially the working part that scans the area beneath boat and transmits the information back to the screen where you can see it. By bouncing a sonar signal, you’ll be able to see fish, weeds and underwater structures. How quickly this echo signal process takes depends on the portable fish finder wattage, the transducer and the depth of the water. The higher the wattage, the more powerful and quicker the signal is processed from the transducer.

When looking around a fishing gear store, do not feel that bigger and more expensive equates to a better portable fish finder. Consider the size of your boat and realistically evaluate your needs. Even if you have the space, do you really need an expensive piece of equipment? Unless your livelihood depends on a great catch, you don’t need a top of the line model. Once you’ve made your choice, make sure that it is properly mounted. An improperly mounted fish locator will not perform correctly. Follow the instructions carefully or get some help. With the right model and proper installation, you’ll get such great catches you’ll think that the fish are finding you!

Need help deciding on the right fish finder? From the Eagle FishEasy 350C color compact fishfinder to the Lowrance HDS-10, there are fishfinder reviews to make the choice easier for you.

22 February 2010 - 0:06The Historical Roots Of MMA: Muhammad Ali Vs. Antonio Inoki

Decades before mixed martial arts became popular in the United States, events matching fighters of different fighting disciplines were very common in Japan. They weren’t called “mixed martial arts” at the time, but that’s essentially what they were. There’s an entire history of pro wrestlers fighting specialists from other martial arts (particularly judo) that were leaving out, but during the’70’s Antonio Inoki began to put the concept of “mixed martial arts” on the map with his matches against fighters from other disciplines.

Inoki billed himself as ‘World Martial Arts Champion’ and would frequently face other high profile fighters in contests that are generally believed to have had a pre-determined outcome similar to professional wrestling. Inoki faced a ‘who’s who’ of the martial arts world, but none were more famous than heavyweight boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

There’s a great deal of uncertainty about many of the stories surrounding how the event came together and transpired, but a few facts are now known. Ali took the fight as it was a large and presumptively easy paycheck. The big money he was earning is what kept him from walking out when his camp started to disagree with Inoki’s handlers over the rules and ‘finish’ fo the fight. Some suggest that it was supposed to be a fair fight going in, but Ali at the last minute insisted on rules more favorable to him. The more likely version of events is that Ali’s handlers agreed to a predetermined finish, only to have Ali balk at the last moment.

By the time the fight began, Ali’s handlers had obtained a ridiculously one sided set of rules that prohibited Inkoi from using a closed fist, striking Ali in the head at all, using any chokes or submissions or even trying to take the fight to the ground. Were it not for the huge amount of money he’d be leaving on the table, Inoki would have been justified in not fighting at all under these highly restrictive and one-sided conditions.

The result was an absolutely horrible fight. Neither man showed much interest in engaging the other, with Inoki spending most of the time on the ground doing what he could under the one sided rules. Inoki threw kicks at Ali’s legs, Ali threw an occasional jab and tried to protect himself from his opponent’s leg strikes. The fight ended a 74-74 draw, with the real losers being the fans.

The fight was officiated by former pro wrestler “Judo” Gene Labell, a legendary tough guy considered at the time to be the ‘baddest man on the planet’. He could have easily beaten up both men, possibly at the same time. That might have provided some much needed entertainment to liven up the tedious charade masquerading as a fight.

After the fight, Inoki’s popularity in Japan was greater than ever. He became something of a hero for trying to fight despite having the rules so decidedly in his opponent’s favor. He’d continue his fights against other martial artists and remain one of the country’s most popular sports figures for years to come. His ‘worked’ martial arts matches can be credited with sparking later hybrid promotions showcasing pro wrestling and martial arts that evolved into PRIDE, RINGS and the major Japanese fight promotions of today.

6 February 2010 - 0:11Visiting Tigers Shock Hurricanes In Overtime

The Clemson Tigers used a touchdown pass on their first possession of overtime to upset the Miami Hurricanes 40-37 on Saturday night to cap a back and forth game. Miami kicked a field goal on their first possession of overtime to take the lead, but Clemson responded with a seldom used play on third and 11 to get the victory as quarterback Kyle Parker completed a 27 yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Ford.

College football betting devotees who backed Clemson as +4 road underdogs eventually cashed their tickets, but they definitely earned their money in a game that saw twelve lead changes and two ties. Clemson improved to 5-2 against the spread with the cover, while Miami dropped to 4-3 against the money. The 77 combined points sailed OVER the posted total of 43.

After the game, Jacoby Ford explained his logic for suggesting the surprise play in the huddle:

“We knew this game was going to come down to who made more plays. And we did.”

Miami has a history of winning when their offense is clicking-this loss was only the second in 115 games when the Hurricanes score 37 or more points dating back to’85.

For his part, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is glad this one is over:

“I have a birthday next month and I think I’m going to turn 50 instead of 40. We had to put on Superman capes. We made plenty of mistakes that could have lost us the game, but they played with poise and confidence. We just kept battling.”

CJ Spiller was also a big factor for the Tigers as he set a school record with 310 all purpose yards including a 90 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also added 81 yards rushing and 104 yards receiving with a 56 yard touchdown catch.

Clemson QB Parker suggested that last week’s win over Wake Forrest was a turning point for his team:

“I think last week we realized that we could be really good and this week we acted on it. I thought we really got some explosive plays and we played well.”

Miami’s quarterback Jason Harris sounded a markedly different tone in his postgame comments:

“This has to be my toughest loss here. We fought so hard throughout the game as a team and didn’t come out with the victory. We let Clemson outwork us, we turned the ball over too much — little things that made us get to this point.”

Clemson will host FCS foe Coastal Carolina next Saturday before resuming ACC play the following week at home against Florida State. They’ll travel to North Carolina State on November–. Miami plays two of their next three on the road, starting next weekend at Wake Forest.

26 January 2010 - 0:09Kansas City Wins First Of Season By Beating Washington

The offensively struggling Kansas City Chiefs have finally found a way to win-play a team with a more stagnant offense than their own. The Chiefs gave Todd Haley his first win as a NFL head coach on Sunday with a—6 win over the Washington Redskins. Kansas City is now 1-5 on the NFL season, while the Redskins slumped to 2-4.

To successfully bet on NFL football you occasionally have to put aside W/L records and look at the underlying statistics. Those who did that found reason to take Kansas City as +6′ road underdogs and were rewarded with the outright victory. Kansas City is now 2-4 against the NFL pointspread and has covered two straight while Washington is a dismal 1-5 versus the money.

After the contest, Haley sounded more relieved than excited about finally putting a “W” on the board:

“We made it pretty difficult, right down to the end. We’ve pushed through a very difficult period. We needed to get some positive reinforcement with a win.”

Kansas City QB Matt Cassel also won for the first time since coming over from New England in the off season. His postgame comments were more upbeat:

“There’s been a lot of change, but this has definitely been special. We rose to the occasion. We made some big plays. We put ourselves in a position to score points.”

Embattled Redskins’ coach Jim Zorn was stripped of his offensive play calling duties by team management after the contest. In one of his last decisions in that role, he pulled starter Jason Campbell at halftime and went with Todd Collins. He explained his move as follows:

“I felt the need to create a spark on our football team offensively and went with Todd. I think the guys responded well. We kept our spark, at times, and then we refizzled.”

The Redskins have managed to win only two of their first six games despite being the only team in NFL history to play their first six games of the season against winless opponents. They’ll get another chance to silence their doubters next Monday night as they host the Philadelphia Eagles. The Skins are +6′ home underdogs with the total set at 38′. They’ll have a bye the next week and return to action on November 8th against the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome. Kansas City will try to string together back to back wins as they host the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
